An eight-year- old girl gazed in wonder at few yoga practitioners performing asanas on a beach. Later she grew up to become one of the most passionate and dedicated Yoga teachers of all times. With a shine in her blue diamond eyes, she says “I wanted to do the amazing things that they were doing with their bodies.” It is all about feeling young and being healthy, for the world’s oldest Yoga teacher. Tao Porchon-Lynch is one word for grace. Born in 1918, on a ship in the middle of English Channel, life has been a fantastical odyssey for Tao Porchon Lynch. Her mother was a native Indian and her father was from France. On her voyage of life she has experienced events that many of us know only through our history text books or television channels. At the tender age of 22, she had already marched with Mahatma Gandhi and had helped the Jews escape from the Nazis during the World War 2.
By then she was a successful model who was signed under the Lever Brothers. Later she moved to London to become an amazing cabaret performer under the mentorship of the renowned Sir Noel Pierce Coward. Notable journalist Quentin Reynolds took note of Porchon, writing that she made a "dark London brighter". After the World War, she moved to the United States where she started her acting career under Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer (MGM) appearing in various Hollywood motion pictures,
including Show Boat (1951), and The Last Time I Saw Paris (1954). She discovered her passion for yoga at a tender age and frequently gave free yoga sessions to her
fellow actors during her career. Later on she found herself becoming more interested and serious in yoga. She mastered Yoga under revered Yogacharyas of all times, Sri Aurobindo, Indira Devi and Sri. B.K.S Iyengar. She is one of the founders of the Yoga Teachers Association and her establishment the Westchester Institute is a dedicated centre for Yoga. She gave up her acting career to completely involve in Yoga and since then she has been a true messenger of Yoga. She was always ‘living Yoga’, not performing it. Her breath is always in tune as she constantly performs yoga subconsciously.
With her award-winning autobiography, ‘Dancing Light: The Spiritual Side of Being Through the Eyes of a Modern Yoga Master’, she was making a statement that it is never too late to chase yourdreams. Along with Indira Devi, she attended International Peace Conference in Israel, an effort for peace in the middle east through the principles of Yoga. Outside of yoga, Porchon-Lynch has continued to involve herself in competitive dancing, particularly in ballroom tango. She has several hundred first-place titles in competitive dancing. Her Holiness Tao Porchon Lynch is a true inspiration to live life to the fullest. This living legend is currently 98 YEARSYOUNG and holds the Guinness World Record for the Oldest Yoga Teacher.
